Windows Server 2016: Print Server Configuration

// To access server manager, click on Start menu & look for Server Manager

// Installation of Print Server

1) [Server Manager - Dashboard] - Click on Manage [upper right-hand corner] - click on Add Roles and Features - under Select Installation type, click next [(x) role-based or feature-based installation] - under Server Installation, click next [(x) Select a server from server pool] - under Server Roles, select (x) Print and Document Services - under Add roles and Features Wizard, click Add Features - click next [back to Server Roles] - click next [back to Features] - click next [under Print and Document Services] - click next [under Roles Services, (x) Print Server ] - click Install [under Confirmation] - click close [under View installation progress].

// Note: Installation of Print Server does not require server reboot.

2) [Server Manager - Dashboard] - Click on Tools - click on Print Management - Under Print Management, look for Print Servers, make sure that a print server e.g. Server16 (local) [using your hostname] exists.

// Making a print queue (i.e. for a networked printer)

3) 1st task is to make sure that the networked printer is successfully installed & online by: ping IP address of printer

4) [Server Manager - Dashboard] - Click on Tools - click on Print Management , Under Print Management, under Print Servers, under Server16 (local),
right-click on Printers - click on Add Printer - under Network Printer Installation Wizard, click on next [ (x) Add a TCP/IP or Web Services Printer by IP address or hostname] - under Printer Address, input (x) Host name or IP address: 10.1.1.5 (.i.e. 10.1.1.5 is the IP address of the network printer), click next - under Additional port Information required (if the network printer cannot be identified), select Device Type (x) Standard Generic Network Card (i.e. this works most of the time) - click next - under Printer Driver, select (x) Install a new driver (this is only needed if (x) Use the printer driver that the wizard selected option is greyed out) - click next - under Select the manufacturer and model of your printer - continue all the way till Completing the Network Printer Installation Wizard - click Finish (if you do not want to print a test page etc).

 5)  [Server Manager - Dashboard] - Click on Tools - click on Print Management - Under Print Management, under Print Servers, under Server16 (local), under Printers, the printer name will appear (e.g: Dell 1130 Laser Printer), right-click on Dell 1130 Laser Printer - under Sharing, select (x) Share this printer, make sure that the Share name is Dell 1130 Laser Printer .

// To map the network printer on client workstations

// When network printer is connected to client workstations, the printer driver is automatically downloaded from print server

6) [On Client workstations - Windows 10] Press R+Windows key together, the Run dialogue box will appear. Input the name of the print server (e.g. \\server16 ) - click ok - under file explorer: Network > server16 > , the shared printer icon (i.e. Dell 1130 Laser Printer) will appear - right-click on Dell 1130 Laser Printer - click on Connect .

// To see all the printers connected to your workstation & select your default printer

7) [On Client workstations - Windows 10] Go to start menu, type printers in search box - click on Device and Printers (under Control Panel) - you will see all the connected & configured printers - right-click on your desired printer to set as default.
